Alcohol Policies for Haworth Hotel

The Haworth Hotel is owned by 换妻社区 and these policies are made in conjunction with other campus policies. Any changes to these policies need to continue the same coordination to ensure that 换妻社区 has a unified understanding of alcohol use at the Haworth Hotel. 

Creative Dining Services (CDS) and the 换妻社区 Events and Conferences Office (ECO) will communicate the expectation that 换妻社区 internal groups follow Hope College policy. However, it is the responsibility of 换妻社区鈥檚 departments or offices to ensure they are following 换妻社区鈥檚 Expense and Resource Policy and any other relevant college policies when hosting events at the Haworth Hotel. Events that potentially impact 换妻社区 students and are not clearly addressed through this policy will be submitted by ECO to the appropriate supervising vice president for review and approval.

General Policies

 

  1. The Haworth Hotel will comply with the State of Michigan Liquor Control Commission, and City of Holland, Michigan, laws and in accordance with the status of the Client's liquor license. 
  2. 换妻社区 has a management agreement with CDS in which CDS agrees to manage the use of alcohol in the Haworth Hotel.
  3. CDS will order, store, and serve alcohol in compliance with the State of Michigan Liquor Control Commission, and City Holland, Michigan, laws and rules and in accordance with the status of Client's liquor license.
  4. CDS leadership, catering leads, and bartenders will all be TIPS (Training for Intervention Procedures) certified.
  5. 换妻社区 student groups are not allowed to host an event with alcohol. 
  6. 换妻社区 students unaffiliated with a group are not allowed to host an event with alcohol.
  7. Events in which 换妻社区 students are the primary audience may not have alcohol. 
  8. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are required at all events serving alcohol. At a minimum, two appetizers per guest must be ordered. 
  9. Alcohol may be included in an event, but should not be the focus of the event.
Bar Policies
  1. Participants must be 21 years of age or older with a physical valid ID to be served. Any guest who appears to be younger than 40 will be asked for identification. Haworth Hotel reserves the right to refuse service at any time. Examples of refusal of service include but are not limited to: suspicions of a fradulent ID, the passing of alcohol to a minor, an overindulged guest, or other non-discriminatory reasons that may threaten the liability of the venue.
  2. No more than two alcoholic beverages may be served per valid ID at a time.
  3. The Haworth Hotel staff will not serve shots, doubles or drinks that require more than a standard pour of alcohol (e.g., Long Island iced teas). One exception is the creation of a 鈥渟ignature cocktail鈥 for a wedding reception.
  4. The Haworth Hotel staff will not announce 鈥渓ast call.鈥
  5. 换妻社区, with CDS as the contractor, is the only authority on the administration of sale and service for all alcoholic beverages on the premises. Therefore, all liquor, beer, and wine must be supplied by the hotel and consumed on the premises. If any outside alcohol is found, it will be confiscated immediately by CDS or 换妻社区 staff. 
  6. State law requires that all liquor, beer and wine must be supplied by the hotel. If any outside alcohol is found, it will be confiscated by Haworth Hotel staff. 
  7. Alcohol is not allowed in public areas of the hotel or outside.
  8. No open alcoholic beverages (e.g. open bottles, cups) may leave the premises.
  9. If an incident occurs regarding the service of alcohol, the staff member involved and the manager on duty should file an incident report form as soon as possible to document the incident.
  10. If an incident occurs, the manager on duty will communicate with other departments (such as the front desk) to ensure that the guest is monitored for the safety of all parties involved. 
  11. If a guest is cut off by one bartender or service member, then that decision is final and will be backed by management and the rest of the team.
换妻社区 Expense and Resource Policy

PERSONAL CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL
换妻社区 will not cover the purchase of alcohol for personal consumption while dining alone or only with other employees, regardless of the nature of the gathering. 换妻社区 will also not cover the expenses related to alcohol, such as, but not limited to, glasses or bartender/server service. Alcohol may not be purchased/reimbursed with federal sponsored program funding. Employees who have access to endowed discretionary funding who wish to make purchases of alcohol outside of the guidelines of this policy must take the discretionary money as compensation first (which will be taxed accordingly).

ALCOHOL AT A BUSINESS MEAL
Alcohol, and related expenses, will be covered for legitimate business purposes that involve a client of the College. All alcohol and related expenses must be approved by the employee鈥檚 divisional Vice President (or the President, if a Vice President is the one making the purchase). Whenever possible, approval should be obtained prior to the event/purchase. 

When alcohol is purchased for donor cultivation, approval from both the Vice President of Philanthropy and Engagement, and the employee鈥檚 divisional Vice President (or the President, if a Vice President is the one making the purchase) are required. Whenever possible, alcohol expenses should have approval prior to the event from the Vice President of Philanthropy and Engagement and the employee鈥檚 divisional Vice President (or the President, if a Vice President is the one making the purchase). 

Alcohol will not be covered at a meal with a candidate for a position at the college. 

Alcohol consumed with a meal (including before or after the meal), while entertaining guests or clients of the College, is covered up to a maximum of two drinks per person. Moderation with respect to the cost of alcohol is the guiding principle in determining what is reasonable and covered and we encourage reasonable judgment about who should be participating in the event/meal. Federal sponsored program money cannot be used to pay for alcohol.

If it is determined that the expense is not allowable, the employee will be responsible for covering the cost.

For events hosted by certain areas of the College (for example, Alumni and Family Engagement), where more than 10 individuals are in attendance and the primary audience is non-students, alcohol may be purchased by the College when it is a pass-through cost (meaning the money is collected by the office and passed through 换妻社区) by an event registration fee or another source is funding the purchase.

ALCOHOL EXPENSES AT THE HAWORTH HOTEL
The Haworth Hotel is the only on-campus location where alcohol is sold. Alcohol expenses will be covered at the Haworth Hotel in the same manner that alcohol expenses off campus would be covered (i.e. for a donor cultivation event). Charging alcohol to a department requires approval from the employee鈥檚 divisional Vice President (or the President when a Vice President is making the purchase). Approval from the Vice President of Philanthropy and Engagement will be required as well for donor cultivation events. Approval from the Vice President(s) (and the President, when applicable) must be received prior to hosting an event at the Haworth Hotel. 

Alcohol will not be permitted at events at the Haworth Hotel where the primary focus of an event is current students. However, alcohol may be sold to current students of legal age at events at the Haworth Hotel if the primary focus of an event is not for students (i.e. a donor cultivation event). The department hosting the event should be mindful of the students in attendance. Please refer to the student handbook and Events and Conferences鈥 policies for more information.

If a non-federal sponsored program has received an exception to the alcohol restrictions in the Expense and Resource Stewardship policy, the exception also applies to alcohol purchases for events at the Haworth Hotel. Federal sponsored programs may not be used to purchase alcohol, regardless of the location.
