Off-Campus Study
Studying in another part of the world or country can be a valuable part of your academic journey, instrumental in studying human behavior in a different cultural context and further understanding the breadth of the human condition.
Some things to consider as a sociology or social work major as you plan your off-campus study experience:
For sociology students
- We recommend that you study off campus during either semester of your junior year or the first semester of senior year
- The following courses must be taken on Hope鈥檚 campus: Theory (fall), Methods (spring), and Capstone (spring)
- Sociology majors can study at nearly every location Hope offers
- It is important to meet with your academic advisor regarding courses you plan on taking off campus and how this fits within your academic plan, particularly credits counting toward your major (be sure to provide appropriate course descriptions)
For social work students
- Early planning is essential; please meet with the social work program director as soon as possible if you are thinking of studying off-campus

Faculty Leaders: Patricia Roehling
鈥淚 chose to study social work because I love the focus of putting yourself in someone else's shoes to advocate for them and help them live their best life. My semester abroad in Salamanca, Spain, helped me understand a different culture and the concept that people live life differently throughout the world, and I will always be able to draw on that experience to effectively empathize with people who have distinctive worldviews and understandings of life.鈥
