换妻社区 has appointed an experienced and respected campus leader as dean of arts and humanities, naming current faculty member Dr. Stephen Maiullo to the role following a national search.
Maiullo has been active in scholarship and administration at the college throughout his nearly 14 years at Hope, including serving as interim dean for the past two years.
鈥淒r. Maiullo has served as interim dean since 2022 鈥 providing care, vision and pragmatic leadership during a time of transition for both academic divisions,鈥 said Dr. Gerald Griffin, who as provost is Hope鈥檚 chief academic officer. 鈥淏efore serving as interim dean, he chaired the Department of World Languages and Cultures and revived our academic program in Greek and Latin.鈥
Maiullo joined the Hope faculty in 2010 as an assistant professor of classics. His teaching has included Latin and Greek language courses, classes that focus on the literature of the classical world, and general education courses on topics including classical mythology, the history of Rome, sport in the ancient world and freedom in the modern world. He also advises students who are preparing to apply for post-graduate fellowships, most notably the Fulbright program.
His recent research has focused on the reception of the classical world, particularly among intellectuals in the early modern period. In addition to articles in refereed scholarly journals, his publications include the book 鈥淎nna Maria van Schurman: Letters and Poems to and from Her Mentor and Other Members of Her Circle鈥 (Iter Press, 2021), co-authored with Hope faculty colleague Dr. Anne Larsen. The book focused on the 17th century Dutch intellectual won the annual Scholarly Edition in Translation Award from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women and Gender.
Maiullo earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in classics, from Saint Anselm College in 2003, and his doctorate, also in classics, from the Ohio State University in 2010.
The college鈥檚 academic departments are organized into four divisions: the arts and humanities, which are grouped under the leadership of one dean; the natural and applied sciences, and the social sciences.
The arts division consists of the departments of art and art history, dance, music and theatre. The humanities division consists of the departments of English, history, philosophy, religion, and world languages and cultures. The dean of arts and humanities also has administrative oversight of the Kruizenga Art Museum; the Van Raalte Institute; the Center for Ministry Studies; the 3/2 鈥淰ita Scholars鈥 pastor-preparation program Hope operates with Western Theological Seminary; the Hope-Western Prison Education Program that the college operates with the seminary; and interdisciplinary programs in women鈥檚 and gender studies, and in Asian studies.
